Jessa Troy

Camp: Chicago

“Dream big because dreams do happen, if you work hard enough” - Skylar Diggins

Jessa caught the attention of our staff from the moment she walked into the gym. I watched her as she began warming up by herself. Her warmup was not just her throwing the ball into the net, she was focused and using that opportunity to work on her game. She had this fire inside of her that came out in not only the individual drills but also the competitive ones. Throughout the entire camp she was so passionate about getting better. If she made a mistake or if there was something that she found herself struggling to do, she would push herself harder the next time around.  “ Coach K had her switch during the 5 on 5 because she kept getting beat, I could tell she did not want to, She was so determined to figure out how to stop her opponent.” Says coach ashley. That passion and resilience is what we love to see during our camps. Jessa not only pushed herself to get better but she also pushed her teammates. She was vocal and coached her teammates throughout the whole camp. She has such a big heart and her appetite for the game is even bigger.  “Jessa has such a great spirit and is a model camper! She is a fan of the game and you can tell she wants to get better.” says coach sky.  Our goal is to help each child grow a little. We want to help ignite the fire that’s already within them. We want to encourage them to not only strive to be a better basketball player but also a better person all the way around. I had the opportunity to sit down with Jessa and ask her a few questions.

When did you start playing?

Uhhh…about when I was 6, maybe 5 or 6.

What grade are you in?

What position do you play?

Point Guard.

What areas of your game do you think you can improve?

Keeping my head up and getting balanced when I’m shooting a really quick shot.

What do you do to work on your game?

I do a lot of ball handling and different drills in my driveway.

Does your dad help you?

Before a game, what do you do to get ready?

Well, I just kind of work on layups and short jump shots and I stretch a little.

What kind of food do you eat before a game?

I drink a lot of chocolate milk. I eat cliff bars, fruit snacks and a banana.

Do you know what college you would like to attend?

Yes, Notre Dame.

Where are you from?

Uhhh…I was born in Milwaukee but grew up in South Bend.

What do you love most about the game?

I just like scoring and I like to win so usually when I lose I get like devastated.

Do you want to play in the WNBA?

What team would you like to play for?

Uhh, I really don't care.

What would you like to say to sky?

Well, I really enjoy being around her, she’s kind of a role model to me. She encourages me to push myself out of my comfort zone.

What did you enjoy most about the camp?

Uhh, probably the shooting stations and one on one and two on two.

Anything else you would like to say?

uhhh, uh uh.

Jessa is only 9 but it looks like she knows where she wants to go next. We are confident that all of her handwork and willingness to get better will take her very far. We wish Jessa the best and hope to see her back next year.
