She was the smallest thing out there, getting tossed around at times but that never stopped her from working hard. As a matter of fact, it seemed to push her to work that much harder. She got down in the paint with the bigs to rebound the ball. She played hard defense and was one of the first to dive on the floor for loose balls.
"Stand out. People in high school do not want to play any sports because they want to go chill with their friends. They are going to be there, there is always seasons for stuff, if this is your season to get better and you want to do something, do that. Stay true to you, don’t follow the crowd. It is okay if you don’t go out and decide to chill at home. Don’t get lost in the crowd."
She is quick on her feet making it hard for her opponent to stop her from getting to the rack. She drove with power and pulled up quick for her jump shots. She was not afraid to take control of the momentum, she took on the role of a true point guard. Not only did she display excellent skills on offense, she made sure she was one of the first people back on defense.
Sage brought energy, fun and motivation to her group. She even got all the younger campers together, formed a huddle and started chanting, “ Skylar Diggins little ballers,” that put the biggest smile on Skylar’s face. I was very impressed by her leadership and ability to work hard throughout the entire camp.
I was so inspired by his energy that I had to stop and cheer him on myself. He was one of the smaller guys at the camp so it was so hard for me to spot him out of the 71 other kids that attended but every time I did happened to get a look at him, he was focused and working extremely hard.
I teamed up with coach Ced at the ball handling station once our New York camp kicked off. This is usually when I get a good look at the campers. Coach Ced is someone who is very intense and loves for his station to be full of energy and excitement. We started off with stationary ball handling and then moved into some cone work. This is when I first noticed Leah, our Star Camper, she really set the tone for the rest of the group.
“ Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses.”- Kobe Bryant
Nashville was a tough one for us. There were so many great players , it was so hard to only choose one. Siva and her dad showed up to the camp early, when they came they let us know about Siva’s condition. She was born with Erbs Palsy, which is a condition that does not allow her to fully extend her left arm.
Talia Gray attended our camp in Detroit. She was the definition of a true leader, she was vocal and an encouragement to the young women she was playing with. She was one of the smaller guards in her group yet she played big, she was not afraid to get down in the paint with the big girls and fight for the ball.
“Dream big because dreams do happen, if you work hard enough” - Skylar Diggins
Jessa caught the attention of our staff from the moment she walked into the gym. I watched her as she began warming up by herself. Her warmup was not just her throwing the ball into the net, she was focused and using that opportunity to work on her game. She had this fire inside of her that came out in not only the individual drills but also the competitive ones.
"Will you get better ?!", is a question I would hear frequently from Uncle Moe while I ran up and down the court. That was his way of pushing us to make better decisions and to believe in ourselves the way he believed in us.
